By Thomas Clouser Genetically modified organisms, or GMOs, are any plants or animals that contain genetic structures that have been manipulated by scientists. Using genetic engineering, scientists can pinpoint beneficial traits in any organism, in terms of added nutrition, better flavor, or greater ability to fight pests or diseases, and incorporate them into other organisms. This is done by isolating a particular gene responsible for a trait in one organism, removing it, and then transferring it to another organism, where this same gene replicates itself, creating a stronger and more resilient strain of the same organism. Although researchers have been employing genetic engineering techniques in agricultural crops since the mid-1980s, and media coverage of these developments has increased sharply in the past few years. Most people have little awareness of genetically modified foods and the controversies surrounding them. In a 2001 survey conducted by Penn State agricultural economists, 84 percent of those questioned said they either knew little or nothing about GMO foods, or hadnt heard of them at all. Yet these techniques and products have already had an impact on our food system, from producer to consumer, and will continue to make their mark on the worlds food supply. Statistics indicate that as much as 60% of the foods we purchase at the supermarket have ingredients that come from GMOs. Since much of the genetic engineering thus far as been performed on corn and soybeans, this would then include ingredients such as vegetable oils produced from these crops. No matter how diligent one may be in isolating their household from genetically modified foods, it is most likely that all of our readers have consumed GMO produced foods, in the form of vegetable oils and corn flakes, delayed-ripening tomatoes, and pest-resistant vegetables. GMOs are ingredients in salads, pizza, baked goods, and many corn-based cereals. They will be consumed from grocery purchases, and in many restaurants and food stands. While the future of genetic manipulation is uncertain, the business is booming and likely to continue. Pressing global needs to produce more food for a greater population, and producing it all from less agricultural land, implies the need for increased yields per acre. Crops that are less often destroyed by plant diseases, and animals that produce more lean meat for the amount of feed they consume are just two factors being heavily addressed in genetic engineering for agriculture. There is a vast amount of land yet on the globe not being farmed. Future decades will likely see the clearing and development of such lands to meet global food requirements, but environmental pressures from many limit such development. Genetic engineering has proven an affordable short term solution. So what are the risks? What will be biotechnologys long-term effects on the environment? By altering nature through genetic engineering, are we coming dangerously close to playing God? Many of these questions may never be answered. She always did have a way with words, my Mom. The problem with this, is that even skeletal people think they're fat, and for them to loose extra pounds in darn right dangerous in some cases. It wasn't so many years ago, that shop mannequins had a bit of meat on their plastic but even these are a flat as a carpenter's board these days. But all this aside there are growing problems in western societies, not only with overweight adults, but we're seeing a lot of heavy kids around nowadays, and this is really not good. But it all starts with the adults, in particular Mum & Dad. The kids tend to feast on the same stuff as their parents do, so it's little wonder we're facing a major crisis with child obesity. So what are the weight loss secrets that we all yearn for? Perhaps my mother was right and we are becoming a donut munching generations of couch potatoes! There are always new claims to weight loss secrets, but a true secret is about as probable as a cure for male pattern baldness. If there was a cure-for-all with regards to hair loss, then we'd never see another bald head in our lives (unless through choice of course!). Same goes for weight loss secrets. These can better be described as weight loss plans and there are many of them around, some better than others. Many folks are so desperate to shed those pounds that they go to extremes. Weight loss pill, lipo suction, having the stomach stitched etc, but these really are last resort measures and all possible alternatives for weight loss should be checked out first, as some of the above mentioned can be potentially dangerous. The secret to successful weight loss lies with you. Or my mother! Which is not really a secret at all. Despite all the fancy diets and eating plans, there is only one tried and tested method that has never really gone away, and that is to eat smaller portions, and get plenty of regular exercise. Of course, eat healthily too. If you cut down to say having 2 double cheeseburgers and large fries instead of your usual 3, well, it's not really going to help much is it. Additionally, if you embark on a new and healthy eating plan and regular exercise regime in the spring time, but decide to slump back into the couch and return your old eating habits during those winter months, then you may find you will put on more weight than you've ever had before. Weight loss is just a beginning, but weight maintenance is the solution for a new and slimmer you. Not only will you feel great but you'll look good too. If you're one of those folks who just can't seem to get real slender, then perhaps you're supposed to be a little on the large size. We are all different shapes, weights, and heights, and if someone carries a little extra meat on their bones, but are fit and active regardless, then perhaps the secret for happiness is to simply lose what you can, accept what you can't, and know the difference. Forget a lifetime of chasing the next weight loss secret and trying to look like string bean. Just concentrate on being you and enjoy who you are. By David Wilding If you had to choose the greatest enemy of your financial security, where would you look? In the lineup, as you look them over, who would you choose? There are so many that qualify. Banks, credit card companies, persuasive advertisers, finance companies, and identity thieves, would all be in the running. Banks because, while you are their customer, they do not have your best interests at heart. They hit you with all sorts of fees and charges for services which used to be provided free. They constantly bombard you with offers to go further into debt. Car loans, home equity loans and other lines of credit are pitched in every statement you receive. But, they are not your worst financial enemy. Credit card companies love to add charges for many different errors on your part (and sometimes theirs). Late fees, over-limit fees, yearly fees, and returned check fees are just a few. They hike your interest rate if you looked cross-eyed on a Tuesday, or miss a payment (not just with them, but any creditor). Still, they are not your greatest financial enemy. Persuasive advertisers love to get you to buy, buy, and buy. They have you pegged as far as your habits. They know your wants and desires. They have so much information on you, the fight isnt even fair. Their ads make you feel good and pull all the triggers. Yet, they are not your greatest financial enemy. Finance companies who charge rates that reach to the moon do you no favors when you walk in the door. Sometimes you dont even need to walk in the door. This person watches the television and reads the magazines; then responds to the ads that are displayed. It is this same person who is careless with their financial information or falls for the scams. This is the man or woman who spends more that they make. This person refuses to save any money. It is this person who ruins all your dreams. It is also this person over who you have the most control. Do not look anywhere else for the cause of your financial problems.
