How To Henna Your Hair

By Suzann Kale Although we use henna as a hair color, it has wonderful side benefits. It thickens hair, and leaves it silky and strong. But you have to buy pure henna (or henna mixed with plant extracts that are clearly labeled). And you must do a strand test first. A strand test will tell you two critical things: 1) whether you will like the final color, and 2) how long to leave the henna on to get that color. Because henna is often left on the hair for an hour or more, it would be wise to set aside a large chunk of time. The best heads for henna are brunettes and dark blonds. Hair that is naturally very dark will look smashing with red henna highlights. Got gray? Contrary to popular opinion, you can get good results with henna. To go brunette, choose a henna that's been mixed with brown taken from safe plant powders like walnut, clove, and even a little Indigo. Just use common sense: If there are ingredients listed that you are unfamiliar with, write them down, go home, and run them through your search engine. Henna does not have a long shelf life. Don't buy it and then keep it around forever - it will lose its potency. You can seal it and freeze it, though, and it will last at least a year. Now for the Fun
Many women consider the preparation of henna to be a ritual. The plant-based dye looks like a green powder, and has a peculiar fragrance, kind of like hay. The odor goes away in a day or so. Assuming you have a box of pure red henna, empty it into a glass or plastic bowl. If you've bought it in bulk, use about 1 cup. Never use metal utensils, bowls, or even hairclips when mixing and applying. Now, boil up some water. Pour the boiling water into the henna, a little at a time. Stir. Keep doing this until you get a paste consistency. Add a couple of pre-beaten eggs if you want, to keep the consistency sticky. Many women add a half cup of strong coffee to tone down the red a little. If you add coffee, use less boiling water. You don't want the mixture to end up drippy. Put a cream or oil around your hairline to keep the henna from coloring your ears and forehead. And don't forget the gloves (or you'll also get red hands!). Apply the paste to clean, dry hair. If it's your first henna treatment, saturate the hair completely. Then wrap it all up with either a plastic bag or some plastic wrap. On top of all that, you might want to wrap a towel, just so you don't frighten the children. Some women use a heated towel. Here's why you absolutely must have done the strand test: It's the only way to know how long to leave the henna on your head. It could be anywhere from 20 minutes to 2 hours or more. When the timer rings, hit the shower. The whole process is messy, so don't make neatness an issue or you'll go nuts. Rinse the henna out - no need to shampoo. Finish with an organic, non-animal tested conditioner. Your color should last for 2 or 3 months, except for root growth. And you're done. There will be a lot of clean-up involved, but you'll have awesome, silky, strong, healthy red hair. (Or whatever color you choose.) All you care about is how much money YOU are spending. If you are average, you are spending almost two hundred dollars a month out-of-pocket for your prescriptions. Who or what is the cause for this expense? Many people see the great advertisements that big drug manufacturers use to promote their medication. The pharmaceutical companies have spent billions of dollars promoting the medications listed here. The manufacturers are not the only ones to blame. The government allows drug companies to control the testing of their own drugs. The trials are often times designed to suit the manufacturers and not the best interest of the consumers. HMOs and hospitals make deals with the drug companies to allow their patients access to the expensive, brand name medication. They do this because, when the patient is discharged, the doctor will write a prescription for this expensive pill when cheaper, older, and proven medications will work just as well. Your doctor, yes YOUR doctor, lives in a world of freebies. Free dinners, free sports tickets, free golf outing, free vacations, among other things are seen as normal instead of the outrageous enticements that they are. Without insurance, Nexium will cost you about $150 a month. On the other hand, generic Prilosec, known as omeprazole, is just a fraction of the price. You will be charged your generic co-pay, typically $5 or $10. Without insurance, thirty omeprazole capsules will set you back about $50, depending where you purchase your medication. Its a scam. Those are the exact words from a former Plavix salesman. The manufacturer spent millions of dollars studying Plavix and was given approval by the FDA mainly because it is an alternative to people who are allergic to aspirin and/or warfarin. The CAPRIE study is cited here in Journal of the National Medical Association. 98(5):711-21, 2006 May. In the trial, 19,185 patients with atherosclerotic vascular disease received either Plavix or aspirin for two years. Plavix provided an additional 8.7% relative risk reduction in ischemic stroke, myocardial infraction, or vascular death compared with aspirin. So yes, $130 a month Plavix works better than forty cents a month aspirin. It works 8.7% better. To put it another way, cheap aspirin is 91.3% as effective as the expensive Plavix Another reason, one study found that patients who took Plavix had 12 times as many ulcers as those who took aspirin plus a heartburn pill. This, despite the fact that up to half of patients taking Plavix take it because their doctors think it is safer for the stomach than aspirin. The most popular brand medication of 2005 is on this list. Lipitor is a popular medication because it works. The problem here is that there are much less expensive medications that will do the same thing for you. Lovastatin, pravastatin, and simvastatin are the generics in this class of medication. Lipitor can easily be replaced with the three generics. All three are much cheaper and work the same way but simvastatin is the most popular choice. You wont see any advertisements for lovastatin or simvastatin because they are generic and both have a proven track record of success. You can further reduce the cost by cutting these tablets in half. These medications are the perfect candidates for splitting. Simply ask your doctor for twice the strength and cut them in half. A one time five dollar investment in a tablet cutter can save you twenty or thirty dollars a month. The story of Clarinex is very similar to the story of Nexium. The manufacturer did a little tweaking of the molecule just before the patent expired. They removed an inactive part of the Claritin molecule and called it Clarinex. To make it easier to understand, they cut the fat off the steak, but it is still steak. Now that Claritin is available over the counter, the price has dropped significantly. There are now a couple of companies making a generic version. Look for the active ingredient called loratadine. Clarinex will not work any better for you than Claritin. There is no reason to spend almost $100 for a months supply of Clarinex. Spend less than $10 a month for generic over-the-counter loratadine. Celebrex was developed several years ago because it causes much less stomach upset than the traditional anti-inflammatories. The problem with Celebrex is that it does not work any better than older, established medications. This is where the its all in your head comes into effect. When you pay $3 for this pretty capsule, your mind is going to tell you that it works. Yes, your mind is playing tricks on you, its called the placebo effect. It's a book that Gladwell describes as being about 'the thoughts and decisions that bubble up from our unconscious.' What we might term intuition, Gladwell refers to as 'thin-slicing'. "Thin-slicing", he writes, "refers to the ability of our unconscious to find patterns in situations and behaviour based on very narrow slices of experience." He goes on to cite psychologist John Gottman who can predict whether couples will still be married, 15 years down the line, with 90% accuracy, after 15 minutes' observation. Gladwell says: "Thin-slicing is part of what makes the unconscious so dazzling. But it's also what we find most problematic about rapid cognition. How is it possible to gather the necessary information for a sophisticated judgement in such a short time? The answer is that when our unconscious engages in thin-slicing, what we are doing is an automated, accelerated unconscious version of what Gottman does.' Our unconscious is generally right. Of course, many of us are reluctant to trust the accuracy of that thin slice. (Many women get a negative 'thin-slice' message first off from partners who prove to be abusive but, for whatever reason, they override it.) They then move into 'thick-slice' technology. Their partner repeatedly behaves deplorably towards them, and quite possibly towards their parents, friends and children also. But still they focus on what's good about their partner, and salvageable about the relationship. How thick does the slice have to be before finally they get it? If you've been an unwitting 'thick-slicer' - and I certainly was - you now have acquired a valuable tool for your armoury. How thick do you need the slice to be? More, doesn't mean different, it just means more. Change is something that you can only effect for yourself, within yourself. As regards relationships, the formidable John Gottman is quite clear. He says: "People are in one of two states in a relationship The first is what I call positive sentiment override, where positive emotion overrides irritabilityOr they can be in negative sentiment override, so that even a relatively neutral thing that a partner says gets perceived as negative. In the negative sentiment override state, people draw lasting conclusions about each other. [My italics] "Once they start going down, towards negative emotion, ninety-four percent will continue going down. They start on a bad course and they can't correct it." You're A Mathematical Genius, You Know!

By Murdo Macleod This may come as a surprise to you. But the truth is, you really are good at mathematics. You see, every day you solve complex problems by breaking them down into tiny little "baby steps". And just like the world's most powerful computer or the greatest ever mathematical prodigy, it's this step-by-step process that enables you to do practically anything. Let's see this process in action with a couple of examples: * * * Example 1 - Calculating the Dreaded Sales Tax The sales tax rate varies around the world, but here in the UK it's 17.5%. Urgh! What kind of figure is that? Let's look at it again and see how we can tame the beast by breaking it down. 17.5 It consists of 10, plus 5 plus 2.5, doesn't it? And those numbers form a distinct sequence. In other words... "10, plus half, plus half again". Now that we know this, we can do something really clever... Suppose you want to calculate 17.5% of 40 UK pounds. How would you work this out? (Stop! Don't even think of reaching for that calculator!) Start with the 10. 10% of 40 is 4. Add half (2) and half again (1) and you get 7. So you proudly announce to your colleagues... "So by adding 17.5% sales tax to our 40 product, the total retail price will be... 47." They look on amazed. Let's take another example and show how simple math really is... * * * Example 2 - Help your daughter with her homework. You arrive home and your daughter needs some help with her math assignment. It's those darn fractions again. She just can't make sense of them. "A half times a half is a quarter. So how, when you multiply things together, can you have LESS than you started out with!" You explain that multiplication and division are two sides of the same thing, and you make it "real world" for her with a little analogy: You get her to imagine a cake. You remind her that "multiplying by half" is another way of saying divide by 2. So she pictures herself halving the cake, giving one piece half to her friend Jane, and keeping the other half. You daughter now has half a cake. She multiplies her piece by a half (i.e. "divides it into two again") and she's left with a quarter. She goes off to bed happy, dreaming about birthday cake And you get to watch the ball game on TV. Again, it's just a matter of simplifying. ------------------------------------------------------------ Real world math is not about mental agony, or learning mechanical formulas that you follow mindlessly like a robot. It's about common sense, seeing how numbers really work, and breaking things down. You just need a little imagination. After all, that's what genius really is.
