Community Support Transforms Lives of Ex-Offenders

By Lynn Sanders An innovative program called Community Support Advisory Council (CSAC), an initiative of the Illinois Department of Corrections, is helping hundreds of ex-offenders learn how to become productive citizens while providing loving support to their families. The work begins at the Sheridan Correctional Center, dedicated solely to drug treatment in the state of Illinois. Through CSAC, the formerly incarcerated meet with community and block leaders on a weekly basis right in their community, to find ways to re-enter society without returning to crime. James Coleman, Project Director for CSACs Prisoner Re-Entry Services program, is an African-American minister, former chef and a formerly incarcerated individual himself. He helps former prisoners see the possibilities of a new life, from both inside and outside the Sheridan prison. Through his work with CSAC, Coleman serves as a liaison between the corrections system and the community, visiting men while they are in prison, and helping them with support when they return home. He also makes policy recommendations to the Department of Corrections and helps develop best practices which can be duplicated throughout Illinois prisons. Block leaders and other interested community residents can attend a monthly meeting, where they meet with parole officers, police, social service providers and formerly incarcerated individuals, to discuss ways to help the returning inmate keep from returning to a life of crime. At these meetings, formerly incarcerated men are often given awards and citations for staying clean and doing the right thing. CSAC also assists ex-offenders with housing, job leads and other immediate needs. Weekly Overcomers Group Meetings offer ex-offenders and their families an opportunity to share their troubles and find support from each other and the broader community. Its really about relationship building, explains Coleman, with a ready smile. Sixty percent of the population in the Sheridan prison is from the Chicago area. Some are ready for change, and some arent. About 80% of ex-offenders from Sheridan come to our offices. Most are African-American, like himself. I work by teaching the job preparedness and training classes, says Coleman. I talk with every individual. I inform them of changes in their community during their incarceration and what services are available to them upon their release. Theyre invited to our office after their release for whatever they need. Sheridan Prison uses the Gateway Foundation and the Safer Foundation to assist inmates with developing social, life and job skills while they are incarcerated, but the role of the community in providing an infrastructure for the returning inmates cannot be minimized. Coleman has witnessed miracles happen through CSACs Overcomers group meetings. The meetings are faith-based; and all are welcome, says Coleman. When I started the meetings in 2004, I wanted to teach from the Bible, but thats not what God wanted. People needed to talkto understand that the power to change was within themselves. Its just awesome to see how people are beginning to understand their own capacity through their own faith. Coleman reflects on the progress of CSAC over the past two years with satisfaction. Weve made a great difference. About 60% of the Austins residents are directly impacted by someone in their family who has been incarcerated. Yet the impact of the change is difficult to measure. He relates a story of a young girl, who considered suicide while her father was incarcerated. Through the support from the CSACs Overcomers meetings, she gained hope and strength to overcome her suicidal thoughts, and now attends meetings with her father at her side. Walter Terry, 34, an ex-offender, who now is drug-free and holds a full-time job at Streetwise says, You have to be active, positive. My job is my foundation. In my spare time, I make meetings. It all plays a part. Its good to talk about your feelings. If you dont deal with your feelings, your feelings will deal with you. Its inspirational, says Sedrick Waller, 45, an ex-offender whose life has totally turned around. The meetings feed the body, mind and spirit. People come from all walks of life looking for a way out. It helped me to keep my commitment to a new way of life, and made me feel like I belonged to someplace. People embrace you for who are you. Its my family outside of my family they let you know youre not alone. Waller, now employed as an ambulance driver, got married and pays rent. God makes a way out of no way. Now, Im giving back to others. Waller was in and out of the penitentiary eight times, and encourages others to have hope. He has also connected six ex-offenders to employment opportunities. Stanley Owens, 27, a student in the last stage of getting his truck-driving license, looks forward to the weekly meetings. Anytime I have questions, I can go to the CSAC meetings for support. You can get good advice; you cant go wrong. Reginald Banks, 39, one of the original members of the Overcomers meetings, now serves as an Outreach Workers at CSAC. It gave me a whole lot of different outlets. I learned how to stay out of prison, and not go back to the old routines, like using and selling drugs. I Can See My Feet! How To Get Rid Of That Big Gut

By Dr. Gary S. Goodman I remember touring Indiana and the Midwest with my seminars and one of my university chums, an ex-ballplayer as it turned out, was talking about guys who get out of shape. Of course, that wasnt me, at least thats what I thought, but he did offer a standard by which to distinguish the truly fat from the slightly puffy: Can you stand with your feet together, bury your chin in your chest, gaze down and see your feet? Or, is your gut in the way? It didnt take too many years on the road, with its sedentary ways and rich food and drink to put me into the I Cant See My Feet Club. I was, for lack of a better term, shocked when I connected his definition to my midsection. But, happily, there is a way back from tubbiness, if youre willing to work at it. Heres the formula that worked for me. I call it attacking the killer Bs: (1) Cut out the booze. (2) Cut out the beef. (3) Cut out the bonbons (sweets and desserts). Each of these moves is worth at least five pounds of weight loss, or 15 pounds, total. Youll probably drop this load within six months, or less. Of course, exercise is the next part of the equation. If you jog a couple of miles a day, I assure you that youll drop a minimum of five more pounds, and maybe more. Do some abdominal exercises, but I dont like crunches. I use twists. Stand with your feet apart, lift your arms as if youre an airplane, move to the left, then to the right, sucking in your gut each time. You can breathe when you wish. I do it, every two or three sets of twists. How many should you do? I do them in sets of 100, and do 500 to 1,000 per day. Just the twists, apart from any dramatic dietary or exercise commitments, enable me to tighten my belt after several weeks. But if you can do the entire package, its not unrealistic to go from 250 to 200, or less, over the course of a year. Ive accomplished that, and then some. And now, yes, I CAN see my feet! Dr. Gary S. Tsunami: Where was God?

By Steve Singleton The powerful tsunami that on Dec. 26, 2004, hit the lands in and surrounding the Indian Ocean, the Bay of Bengal, and the South China Sea caused terrible devastation and immediate loss of thousands of lives, followed by an aftermath in which tens of thousands more perished. The earthquake-triggered tsunami has prompted people all over the world to ask themselves and others, "Where was God when this happened? Did He fall asleep? Is He even real?" Sometimes, what we call disasters is just a part of God's organization of nature; humans are merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. In Ecclesiastes 9:1112, wise King Solomon observes:
I have seen something else under the sun: the race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all. Moreover, no man knows when his hour will come: As fish are caught in a cruel net, or birds are taken in a snare, so men are trapped by evil times that fall unexpectedly upon them.

The 12/26/04 tsunami seems to fall into this category. People were killed with no discrimination with regard to race, creed, class, or religion. If God had a purpose in the tsunami, it remains obscure to me. You will hear some Christians deny that events happen by chance because they think that this means God has released His grip on the controls of the universe. But according to this passage, some disasters just happen. This is not because God has no control but because He has constructed the universe in such a way that an unbroken chain of causes and effects will take place according to the physical laws He has established unless He intervenes. In the case of the tsunami, its cause was an extremely powerful undersea earthquake. The earthquake in turn was caused by the shifting of tectonic plates. The plates are all the building blocks of the earth's crust, designed to interact in this way. Earthquakes happen all over the world. Those that happen in or near the earth's oceans sometimes cause tsunamis. Many Christians and Jews believe that such catastrophes are part of nature's participation in the Fall: as a result of the sin of Adam and Eve, the ground began to bear thorns instead of abundant produce, the pain of childbearing increased, work became toil, and death became the constant companion of humanity. By extension, we could easily deduce that typhoons and tornadoes, mudslides and avalanches, earthquakes and tsunamis are all the result of the Fall--that the moral rebellion of the First Couple fractured the pre-Fall cosmic harmony. As Paul says in Romans 8:20: "Creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the One who subjected it." One way of explaining it is to compare the Fall to a broken gear in a printing press: the entire complicated system of interconnected gears, wheels, and pulleys has to be adjusted to allow for the missing teeth in one gear. So it is with the universe--it has been adjusted to our brokenness. It doesn't run as smoothly as it would have if human rebellion had not "thrown a monkey wrench" into the machinery of the cosmos. As difficult as it is for us to accept emotionally, the Bible affirms that God sometimes causes natural disasters. In Isaiah 45:5 and 7, the LORD confronts Cyrus:
I am the LORD, and there is no other; apart from me there is no God.... I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.

Cyrus was probably a Zoroastrian, believing in two gods--one called Ahura Mazda, who is perfectly good and brings blessings to the world, and his twin brother, Angra Mainyu or Ahriman, infinitely evil and bringing the world trouble. But the LORD God claims to be the sole deity of the universe. Some disasters happen due to God's permissive will, as is the case with the calamities that befell Job (Job 1:1819). Others come in response to God's positive command for the purpose of punishing the wicked and motivating people to repent. In Amos 4:613, for example, the LORD explains His purpose in releasing one disaster after another upon Israel:
"I gave you empty stomachs in every city and lack of bread in every town, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD. "I also withheld rain from you when the harvest was still three months away. I sent rain on one town, but withheld it from another. One field had rain; another had none and dried up. People staggered from town to town for water but did not get enough to drink, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD. "Many times I struck your gardens and vineyards, I struck them with blight and mildew. Locusts devoured your fig and olive trees, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD. "I sent plagues among you as I did to Egypt. I killed your young men with the sword, along with your captured horses. I filled your nostrils with the stench of your camps, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD. "I overthrew some of you as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah. You were like a burning stick snatched from the fire, yet you have not returned to me," declares the LORD. "Therefore this is what I will do to you, Israel, and because I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel." He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn to darkness, and treads the high places of the earth--the LORD God Almighty is his name."

A similar thing happens in Revelation, chapters 8 and 9. The natural disasters pictured by the trumpets seem to stand for a wide range of ways that God can use to prompt the wicked to repent. In this case, they stubbornly refuse: "The rest of mankind that were not killed by these plagues still did not repent of the work of their hands; they did not stop worshiping demons, and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone and woodidols that cannot see or hear or walk. Nor did they repent of their murders, their magic arts, their sexual immorality or their thefts" (Rev. 9:20-21). Sometimes, however, God's purpose is only to punish the wicked, as in the Great Flood (Gen. 6:13, 17) and the great hail God rained down on the Amorites (Josh. 10:11). In the bowls of wrath revealed in Revelation chapter 16, God makes no allowance for repentance. Many scholars are convinced that John's vision symbolizes this by stating that no one is allowed into heaven's temple until the bowls of wrath have all been poured out, making it impossible to intercede and make atonement for the sinners (Rev. 15:8; compare Num. 16:4650; 2 Sam. 24:1525; Jer. 7:920). When such punishing disasters take place, the righteous are sometimes spared, as in the case of several of the plagues against Egypt (Exod. 8:2223; 9:37, 2326; 10:2223; 11:47; 12:1213, 2830). On other occasions, however, the righteous suffer right along with the wicked. Consider, for example, the Habakkuk's dialogue with God about the wicked among his people. In answer to Habakkuk's complaint, the LORD promises to send the Babylonians against his people (1:5-11). In response, the prophet asks (Hab. 1:13):
Your eyes are too pure to look on evil; you cannot tolerate wrong. Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?

In vv. 14-16, Habakkuk says the wicked Babylonians catch and kill people like fishermen. It is like they gather nations in their dragnet; no one escapes. Then they celebrate and worship their "net" as a god. Then Habakkuk asks (v. 17), "Is he to keep on emptying his net, destroying nations without mercy?" The answer comes back that God understands how wicked they are (2:119). He concludes with the reassuring affirmation: "The LORD is in His holy temple. Let all the earth be silent before Him" (2:20). In other words, God is saying, "Habakkuk, you're just going to have to trust Me on this one. Even though disasters happen that you don't understand, I'm still on the throne. I still rule the universe." Habakkuk's response is commendable. After describing his fearful witnessing of the LORD's wrath, he recommits himself to trusting Him:
I heard and my heart pounded, my lips quivered at the sound; decay crept into my bones, and my legs trembled. Yet I will wait patiently for the day of calamity to come on the nation invading us. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. The Sovereign LORD is my strength; he makes my feet like the feet of a deer, he enables me to go on the heights."
That's the kind of response we must have when we witness catastrophes like the tsunami of December 26, 2004. We can acknowledge that we don't understand why God would allow such a thing to happen, but at the same time recognize that we are so limited in our perspective compared to the Eternal One. He has proven Himself faithful over a thousand generations, and we can trust that He "does not change like shifting shadows" (James 1:17). The righteous can be sure of this: God has not forgotten them and has promised to guide all events--even horrendous natural disasters--for their ultimate good (Rom. 8:2829). His purpose for us is to use the things that happen to us to transform us into the image of His Son, Jesus Christ. If He accomplishes that, with our willing cooperation, anything else that happens to us is worth it. Paul reasons, "I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us" (Rom. 8:18), and he writes this:

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.--2 Cor. 4:1618

Nor is Paul only referring to persecutions; natural calamities fall within his scope, as his laundry list of sufferings in Second Corinthians 11:23-29 demonstrates. The wicked have no such hope. If disaster overtakes them, they can only despair (Ps. 73:1820; Isa. 57:2021). If they survive, their grief over their losses can prove inconsolable (1 Thess. 4:13). Disasters that should draw them toward God may only harden their hearts as they resist the pull (see Exod. 8:15, 32; Rev. 9:2021). When we witness a disaster that falls on others, we should approach God in prayer on their behalf and do what we can to lend aid. When we experience one ourselves, we should run to Him for rescue, for aid, and for consolation. God can use a terrible disaster to bring about a wondrous good in someone's life. Were You Born Homosexual?

By Brian Parker That is a good question. A question that I am not honestly qualified to answer. While I somewhat doubt the existence of a homosexual gene, I cannot prove or disprove that one exists. What I can prove though is that you are, without a doubt, not reborn homosexual. When I speak of rebirth I am talking about being reborn through Christ. John 3:3 - 8 3 In reply Jesus declared, "I tell you the truth, no one can see the kingdom of God unless he is born again." 4 "How can a man be born when he is old?" Nicodemus asked. "Surely he cannot enter a second time into his mother's womb to be born!" 5Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit. 6Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit." Here are some passages from the Bible that speak out against homosexuality and the sexually immoral. Leviticus 18:22 22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination. Leviticus 20:13 13 If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Romans 1:24-27 24 Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonor their own bodies between themselves: 25 Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen. 26 For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: 27 And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. The passages that I have quoted are from the Old and New Testaments. One who does not try to pervert the word can easily discern these for themselves. The Bible teaches that homosexuality is a sin unto God. One important difference in these scriptures is that in the Old Testament this act was punishable unto death. Before Jesus died for our sins we were judged solely by God's law. There was no way for the sinner to reconcile themselves unto God as we are not even worthy of his forgiveness. When Jesus came into play everything changed. Once he died if we are reborn through him we can be washed clean of any sin. When we are forgiven the sin is gone. It is as if you never committed it. This does not mean that one would never feel the desire for a homosexual relationship again or the temptation to commit any sin. It means that it is just that, a temptation. As me must try to avoid other temptations, a homosexual person must remove themselves from the environment or situation that may lead them to sin again. Q. What can I do if I am a homosexual and want to repent?
A. Like any sin homosexuality will definitely be hard to overcome. The first and most important thing to do is ask for forgiveness and accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior. Secondly remove yourself from the homosexual environment that you have been living in and seek help. Find a church that preaches the Word of God from the Bible. Speak with a Christian minister or Christian counselor. These people can lead you in the right direction and put you in contact with someone who understands your situation. If you wish to change, please do not be afraid of telling a Christian minister about your problem. Q. What if my minister or a church leader is homosexual or promotes homosexual acceptance.
A. This person should be considered a false prophet. Do not follow this person as they are polluting the Word and will only lead you to darkness. GET AWAY! If you are strong enough in God to minister unto this person please try to save them. If not, find someone who might have stronger faith than yours. God does not wish that anyone should perish and that person is included. Let us pray Heavenly Father I ask that you would guide our church and government leaders to seek and do your Word. Please bless people that may be involved with homosexuality that they may come and seek your forgiveness and turn from their ways. Please protect your church and it's people from those who wish to pollute it. I love you Heavenly Father and thank you for everything.
